My name is Mauricio Ortiz and I’m an artist.
Originally from Costa Rica, I have lived and worked in London since 1990. During this period I have shown my painting at Christie’s, The Royal Academy and Haunch of Venison, and collaborated creatively with Paul Smith, Robert Plant, Jamie Oliver and Roisin Murphy. I have worked at The Royal Opera House Production Workshop as a scenic artist, as art fabricator for MDM Props Ltd. and set dresser and scenic artist for numerous TV productions. I favour projects where artistry is required and speak English, Spanish, French and Italian.
Having grown up in the tropics I had access to Natural Wonders rather than the great European museums. Nature therefore provides the textural universe contained in the scenic painting and art fabrication projects I engage with and am interested in channeling different styles, painting techniques or historical periods, much like how an actor inhabits a character.
Some of my skills include: scenic painting, drawing, sculpting, bas-relief modelling, oil and water gilding and prop making.
